Pride Weekend in Indy – Reflections, Joy, and Care
Pride weekend is here, and I’m looking forward to celebrating with our vibrant LGBTQ+ community and allies right here in Indy.
I’ll be at Celebration on the Circle this Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. (weather permitting). If you're there, come say hi! I’ll be sharing space with others, talking about health, and giving away a few small prizes. You can find the full weekend schedule at indypride.org.
As a family doctor, I’ve seen how deeply healthcare can impact a person’s sense of safety—especially for LGBTQ+ folks who’ve been dismissed, judged, or misunderstood. I’ve cared for people navigating fear, stigma, and systemic barriers—and I’ve also witnessed their incredible strength, joy, and resilience. I carry those stories with me every day, and they’ve shaped the way I practice medicine. Here’s something I believe to my core:
If you can care well for LGBTQ+ people—seeing them fully, listening without judgment, showing up with respect and humility—you’re equipped to care well for anyone.
Pride is joy—and it’s also resilience.
It’s a celebration, yes. But it’s also a time to reflect on how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. With rising attacks on trans and gender-diverse people, simply living your truth can feel like an act of courage.
In times like these, taking care of ourselves—and each other—matters more than ever. That can look different for everyone:
Maybe it’s keeping a therapy appointment, texting a friend, turning off the news, or dancing to your favorite song. You don’t have to be perfect. You just need space to be.
If you’re feeling heavy right now, you’re not alone.
Here are a few gentle reminders that have helped me—and many of the people I care for:
Go back to the basics. Hydrate. Eat something nourishing. Move your body. Sleep.
Protect your peace. Log off when it’s too much. You’re allowed to take breaks.
Reach out. Let someone know how you’re really doing. Connection heals.
Honor your limits. You don’t have to explain your “no.” Rest is a form of resistance.
Check in with yourself. There’s no shame in not having it all together. Talk it through.
Make room for joy. Even tiny moments can make a big difference.
Pride is about being seen. Being safe. Being whole. Everyone deserves care that honors who they are.
If you're looking for a doctor who listens—who sees you—I’m here. And whether or not you need me, I hope you find care that makes you feel respected and valued.
See you at the Circle,
Dr. V
